Appointment of New Aged Care Financing Authority Chair

The Minister for Aged Care, Ken Wyatt AM, today announced the appointment of Mike Callaghan, AM PSM, as the new Chair of the Aged Care Financing Authority (ACFA).

This independent statutory committee has an essential role in providing advice to the Government on funding and financing issues affecting the aged care sector.

“Mr Callaghan brings a wealth of experience and skills to the Authority,” Minister Wyatt said. “He has held senior positions in the economics and finance fields in Australia and overseas, including in the Australian Treasury and the International Monetary Fund. He received a Public Service Medal in 2009 and was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2013.”

Lynda O’Grady retires

Mr Callaghan will take over from Lynda O’Grady, who is retiring from the position after two terms.

“Ms O’Grady has been the chair of the ACFA since its establishment in August 2012 and has made a significant contribution to developing aged care analysis and policy, and the reporting of financial aspects of the sector,” Minister Wyatt said.

“Under her leadership, the Authority has provided detailed, high-quality advice on aged care funding and financing. This has included advice on reforms to accommodation pricing, encouraging refurbishment of residential aged care facilities, and analysis of issues affecting rural and remote providers. The Authority has also had significant input into the recent legislated review of aged care.”

The ACFA has published five comprehensive annual reports that have helped government, the sector, consumers and financiers to better understand the funding and financing dynamics of Australian aged care.

Ms O’Grady’s term as Chair will end on 30 April 2018, and Mr Callaghan will start on 1 May 2018. For more information about the ACFA, visit
